Homemade Soft Pretzels

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 ½ cups warm water
  • ½ cup baking soda
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • coarse sea salt (for topping)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5 minutes.
  2. Add flour and salt to the yeast mixture and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth.
  3. Let the dough rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  4. Preheat the oven to 450°F (232°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  5. Roll the dough into ropes and twist them into pretzel shapes.
  6. In a large pot, bring water and baking soda to a boil.
  7. Boil each pretzel for 30 seconds, then place on the baking sheet.
  8. Brush with egg wash and sprinkle coarse salt on top.
  9. Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.

Notes

  • For a sweeter pretzel, add a sprinkle of cinnamon sugar on top after baking.
  • Experiment with different toppings like sesame seeds or cheese.
